I started reading this one with a bit more open mind and, well, because my friend and fellow book-devourer said it was worth it. Even though it's 700+ pages long!
Let's start at the beginning.
You get your stone-hearted Nesta, incapable of saying anything even remotely nice out loud, and her inner monologues were truly painful to read. I debated piling this one on my dnf pile… But, I sat and read a few chapters every day and Nesta's story slowly crept up to me. You know, like the darkness all the way down in the library *wink wink*
Nesta slowly, and I mean slowly, changed the way she spoke to other people and to herself. That hatred and ice were rooted so deep in her, that you really can't expect for her to melt at the beginning when there's a little bit of love thrown her way.
Cassian was your usual smirk-filled badass who had it bad for Nesta. And she kept rejecting him. And he kept extending his arm. I liked that he kept trying to get through to her and showing her she is worth it.
Part two of the book was when the fun began.
Nesta started training with her little circle of female friends. And how cool was it to read about it. The friendship they formed. I loved reading about this.
I may have sobbed while reading about Nesta and Cassian's hike. It made me feel so many things.
All in all, it was a very enjoyable read. You got your romance (maybe a bit too much unnecessary porn), friendship, women empowerment arc and a very thorny character growth.
It was a road to hell and back.
